‘Ahok’ and the Islamic hardliners: A threat to Indonesia’s democracy; or just robust politics?
 
The ‘run-off’ election for the Governor of Jakarta, will be held in April, between the incumbent, Basuk ‘Ahok’ Tjahaja Purnama and challenger, Anies Baswedan. The campaign has been caught up in blasphemy charges against ‘Ahok’ following widespread protests instigated by Islamic hardliners claiming he insulted the Koran.
 Is this simply a case of this Christian and ethnic Chinese Governor having allegedly broken the law or are there more sinister objectives at play? Is this an opportunity for the Islamic hardliners to push Indonesia towards an Islamic State? Is this a threat to democracy or simply democracy in action? Either way, this is a critical time for Indonesia and will have symbolic implications for the region.
