The Tasman Map: Dutch exploration and the mapping of Australia

Join us at TMAG for our October Lunchtime Talk with author and historian Ian Burnet.

Ian first travelled to Indonesia in 1968 as a young geologist and went on to spend more than 30 years living, working and travelling throughout the archipelago. His fascination with the region’s cultures, maritime history and extraordinary role in global trade has since inspired a series of acclaimed books.

His latest book, The Tasman Map, explores the early Dutch voyages of discovery between 1606 and 1644 and the creation of the remarkable map that revealed a recognisable outline of Australia’s northern, western and southern coasts.

Ian will take us into the world of the Dutch East India Company, the Indonesian archipelago and the voyages that gradually transformed European understanding of the great southern land, culminating in Abel Tasman’s voyages of 1642 and 1644.

Ian is also the author of Spice Islands, East Indies, Archipelago: A Journey Across Indonesia and Where Australia Collides with Asia, drawing together decades of research into the maritime connections between Australia, Indonesia and the wider world.
