Scams Awareness Week 2026

QUT Centre for Justice

KG-Q430

Scams are often discussed in terms of financial losses, complaint volumes and reporting statistics. Yet behind every number is a person whose trust has been exploited, whose confidence has been shaken, or whose relationships and wellbeing have been affected. As scams become increasingly sophisticated through the use of generative AI, targeted online advertising and persuasive digital communication, understanding how people encounter, assess and respond to information online has never been more important. This panel brings together leading researchers from QUT's Centre for Justice, Digital Media Research Centre (DMRC) and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S) to explore the intersection of technology, trust, media and digital inclusion in the context of contemporary scam risks. Together, they will examine how emerging technologies are reshaping the online environment, why some individuals and communities may be more vulnerable than others, and what can be done to build a more informed, resilient and supportive response to scams. Based on the national theme of "No One's Just a Number", the discussion will emphasise the human experience behind scam victimisation and the importance of keeping people at the centre of prevention, policy and support initiatives.Facilitator

Professor Cassandra Cross, Centre for Justice, Queensland University of Technology

Panel

Dr Phoebe Matich, Digital Media Research Centre and ADM+S Centre of Excellence, Queensland University of Technology

Dr Khanh Luong, ADM+S Centre of Excellence, Queensland University of Technology

Dr Kim Osman, Digital Media Research Centre, Queensland University of Technology

Professor Dan Angus, Digital Media Research Centre and ADM+S Centre of Excellence, Queensland University of Technology

Refreshments to follow.
