Over 25,000 babies are born premature every year in Australia. The benefits of breast milk for preterm babies are well known, yet, due to their immaturity, successful breastfeeding can be a challenge for many preterm babies and their mothers. This event will include presentations covering the science behind the beneficial effects of breast milk, current initiatives in the neonatal nursery to support breastfeeding, use of medications to boost breast milk supply, and the success and research directions of Australia’s first national donor human milk bank. OUR SPEAKERSA/Professor Alice Rumbold, Principal Research Fellow and co-lead, Perinatal and Pregnancy Care Program, South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI). Alice is a perinatal epidemiologist by background, she is passionate about improving the care provided to women, babies and families during the pregnancy and newborn period, with a focus on vulnerable population groups. She is currently leading a number of studies that aim to improve use of breastmilk and breastfeeding among preterm infants. Breastfeeding premature babies: benefits, challenges and new research to support mums and babiesBreast milk has particular protective effects for infants born premature but rates of breastfeeding are often substantially lower among these infants than in term-born infants. This presentation will discuss the known benefits and challenges to supporting breastfeeding in preterm infants and new research initiatives to increase access to human milk. A/Professor Amy Keir, Consultant Neonatologist, Women’s and Children’s Hospital / NHMRC Early Career Fellow, South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) and the University of AdelaideAmy’s work focuses on using clinical practice improvement approaches to improve outcomes that matter to families experiencing preterm birth. Maternal breastmilk, donor milk and quality improvement – bring them all together!For women experiencing preterm birth and for subsequent journey, providing breastmilk for their preterm babies and breastfeeding can be extremely challenging. Identifying ways to better support women and their families through this time period is essential to improve healthcare outcomes. We will take the audience through a number of initiatives underway in South Australia to improve outcomes related to human milk for babies born preterm.A/Professor Luke Grzeskowiak, Channel 7 Children’s Research Foundation Fellow (Medication Use and Safety) / Head, Paediatric and Perinatal Pharmacoepidemiology Research Group, Flinders University and the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) Luke is a clinical pharmacist by training, his research is focused on optimising maternal and child health through the development and promotion of safer and more effective approaches towards medicines use. Luke is currently an expert advisor on medication use in pregnancy and lactation to Australian Therapeutic Guidelines and is leading a number of studies focused on optimising medication use in the setting of lactation difficulties such as low milk supply and mastitis.Using medications and other substances to boost breast milk supply – evidence vs. hypeRecent studies demonstrate high levels of awareness and promotion regarding the use of substances, known as galactagogues, to support and increase breast milk production. This presentation will provide an overview regarding the science and evidence related to the use of such substances during breastfeeding.Dr Laura Klein, Research Fellow, Australian Red Cross LifebloodLaura co-leads the Lifeblood Milk research program with Dr Vanessa Clifford, which collaborates with researchers and clinicians across Australia to better understand how donated breast milk could be used to help improve outcomes for vulnerable infants.Milk Banks’ roles in providing vulnerable infants with a human milk dietWhile mother’s own milk is the best nutrition, not every mother can provide enough milk straight away. Lifeblood supplies donated breast milk to vulnerable infants who need extra nutrition while in hospital. This presentation will explore how Lifeblood’s Milk service operates and potential future uses for donated breast milk.OUR CHAIRSProfessor Maria Makrides is Deputy Director at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) and the Theme Leader for SAHMRI Women and Kids. As a research dietitian, Maria is committed to improving the nutrition and health of mothers and their babies through the conduct and translation of high quality research. Maria&#x27;s work has been responsible for changes in international policy regarding the safe composition of infant foods, national and international guidance on diet and supplementation during pregnancy, and infant feeding guidelines to minimise the risk of childhood allergies. She has an international reputation for conducting high quality multi-centre clinical trials. Professor Claire Roberts (HDA Co-Convenor) is an inaugural NHMRC Leadership Fellow and Professor and Matthew Flinders Fellow. She leads the Pregnancy Health and Beyond Laboratory (PHaB Lab) within the College of Medicine and Public Health at Flinders University. She is an internationally recognised authority and thought leader in placenta research. She has a strong interest in genetic and modifiable lifestyle factors including maternal nutrition that contribute to health in pregnancy and long into the future for mother and child. She has lead research on large human pregnancy cohorts in Adelaide since 2005.The speaker session will conclude at 7.15pm. If restrictions and space allow light refreshments will be offered to 8.15pm.This event will be held under COVID-SAFE guidelines. Seating will be limited.
