We are excited to be collaborating with our friends UNSW Canberra at the Australian Defence Force Academy with this panel discussion centred on space security in the Asia-Pacific region. In this event, our accomplished speakers will examine a range of issues facing space security in our region. Whether you’re interested in arms control, greater power politics, international law, or space-based technology, this is an event not to be missed. This event will consist of a moderated panel discussion followed by an audience Q&amp;A. There will be nibbles and a chance to socialise after the event. The event will be hosted at the lotus hall at the ANU Centre for China and the World.SPEAKER PROFILE: Dr. Cassandra Steer is a Mission Specialist with the ANU Institute of Space (InSpace), and a Senior Lecturer at the ANU College of Law specialising in space law, space security and international law. Dr. Steer has more than a decade of international experience teaching at universities in Australia, Europe, North America and South America, and brings a comparative perspective to all her research and teaching. Dr. Steer was formerly Acting Executive Director at the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Ethics and Rule of Law, where her major focus was the design and delivery of a high level international conference on “The Weaponization of Outer Space: Ethical and Legal Boundaries”. Dr. Steer recently published a book titled “War and Peace in Outer Space: Law, Policy, and Ethics”. Dr. Benjamin Zala is a Research Fellow in the Department of International Relations within the AU College of Asia and the Pacific. His work focuses on theoretical and historical approaches to the politics of the great powers and the management of nuclear weapons. His work has been published in journals such as Review of International Studies, Pacific Review, Cooperation and Conflict, Journal of Global Security Studies, Third World Quarterly, The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists and The Nonproliferation Review. He has also published in media outlets and blogs such as The Straits Times, the Sydney Morning Herald, The Interpreter, and East Asia Forum.Duncan Blake transferred from the permanent Air Force to the Reserves in January 2017, after 22 years as a Legal Officer in the Royal Australian Air Force. He worked at the tactical, operational and strategic levels at home and on deployment overseas. Duncan has contributed extensively to doctrine and policy for the Australian Department of Defence and whole-of-government, on issues of operations law and space law. He has chaired inter-departmental and international working groups on space law, especially in a military and strategic context. Although this work is not publicly accessible, he has authored many articles, including an article for which he was awarded the 2011 Lieber Society Military Prize by the American Society of International Law.Dr Melrose Brown leads the numerical space situational awareness research at UNSW Canberra Space and is also the Space Masters program coordinator. He holds a Masters and Doctor of Philosophy in Aerospace Engineering. Previously he was responsible for the numerical simulation and analysis of the &#x27;SCRAMSPACE&#x27; hypersonic flight vehicle and was heavily involved with the vehicle&#x27;s design, construction, testing and launch. Since joining UNSW Canberra he has sought to apply the same coupling of high fidelity numerical simulations with ground and flight tests to study the complex interaction between satellites and the space environment.
