SASi winter seaweed forage and cooking workshop

A forage of local edible seaweeds species guided by experienced botanical illustrator and forager, Chris Rockely. Followed by a workshop on preparation and preserving methods to make seaweed products to take home.Katie’s Cove is a well loved algae and snorkel hotspot in Melbourne’s West. There is a large array of seaweeds found in and around the rockpools there. It's a great chance to see these seaweeds growing and the creatures that inhabit them. We will begin the day with an 1hr morning ramble and forage and then we take our edible finds back to the Anglers hall. Here we will explore preparation and preserving methods and then get creative and make a range of seaweed products to take home. Many algae are high in iron, iodine and other minerals and can be easily added into salads, soups, dips and other delicious dishes. Seasonally, Winter sees brown seaweeds including Wakame and lots of reds. We will also be using our foraged seaweed to make a foragers feast for the group. Like any forage we will use what is found on the day and use a selection of recipes.Then set the table and enjoy a 'feast from the sea'. This 'Forage to Feast' is being held in conjunction with the Seaweed Appreciation Society international. SASi is a group research exercise in investigating marine habitats, applications for kelps in art and cuisine and ocean regeneration.
