Kakadu National Park is a living cultural landscape. It has been home to Aboriginal people for more than 65,000 years.A place of immense biodiversity, Kakadu is home to 2,000 plant species, around one-third of all Australian bird species and about one-fifth of all Australian mammals.The park is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for both its natural and cultural values.

Kakadu Bird Week 2025

From 24–28 September, Kakadu National Park is celebrating Bird Week. Five unforgettable days of expert-led walks, birdwatching cruises, talks and cultural demonstrations.

Come and listen to a talk by local Bininj/Mungguy and linguists from Bininj Kunwok Regional Language Centre in Jabiru who will teach you about the local Aboriginal languages of Kakadu National Park and western Arnhem Land.This session will focus on birds. You will learn how to pronounce some basic words and phrases including the names of birds, and how Bininj talk about relationships between birds and the environment, or between birds and people. Also discover a specially curated exhibition with bird-themed artworks by a range of local Aboriginal artists throughout Bird Week in the <a href="https://marrawuddi.com.au/" title="https://marrawuddi.com.au/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Marrawuddi </a>gallery. From sculptures and painting to weaving and jewellery making, explore each artist’s unique practice and learn about the birds that inspired their work.
