As Infant Mental Health week (7-13 June) approaches you are invited to reflect and engage with us as we turn our attention toward the next generation - babies and young children who have been recently born or living through the critical first 2000 days of their lives a time in which their caregiving environment will shape who they become. OUR SPEAKERSDr Ros Powrie, Perinatal, Infant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Women’s and Children’s Health Network, SA President AAIMHInfant Mental Health in a post-COVID world: Keeping our eyes on infantsRos Powrie has worked for over 30 years in public Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and for the last 20 years in Perinatal and Infant Mental Health at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. She has trained, taught and supervised undergraduate, postgraduate and professional multi-disciplinary groups including masters and PHD psychology students. She is a trained mindfulness teacher and has delivered and researched evidence based mindfulness groups for expectant parents. Since 2008, she has been a visiting psychiatrist to Maari Ma Aboriginal Corporation in Broken Hill. She currently sits on the National Board of AAIMH and is keen to further advocacy and awareness for the wellbeing of all infants. A/Professor Amy Keir, Senior Consultant Neonatologist, Women’s and Children’s Hospital / NHMRC Early Career Fellowship, South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) / University of Adelaide. and Angela Cavallaro, Clinical Nurse Neonatal Intensive Care, Neonatal intensive Care and Paediatric Nursing graduate certificates, Quality improvement Facilitator Perinatal Quality Improvement Program, Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Implementing family-integrated care in the neonatal unit - approach and challengesAmy Keir is the medical co-lead of the Perinatal Quality Improvement Program at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Working with her nursing and midwifery co-leads, she is implementing a perinatal quality improvement program with a focus on improving outcomes for women and babies. With her own experience of preterm birth and a child born preterm, she has become even more focused on the absolute need to keep women, families and their babies together, even in the neonatal intensive and special care settings. Angela Cavallaro has been a neonatal intensive care nurse for 15 years. She has more recently commenced working with families and staff to improve the connections between parents and babies in the nursery, improving the safe, secure and confident transition home by using Quality Improvement (QI) methodology. She has facilitated a number of QI projects across the Women’s and Babies division of the Women’s and Children’s hospital to improve outcomes for premature and sick babies and their families. She has chaired the SA branch of Australian College of Neonatal Nurses. She has a keen interest in improving the way that neonatal teams can provide care and teach parents to be involved in care that supports the development of their babies and together form strong, lifelong connections. Zakiyyah Muhammad, Masters of Social Work and Accredited Mental Health Social Worker in Private PracticeMy Baby’s Mind. Infant Mental Health within CALD and New Arrival Communities Zakiyyah Muhammad has journeyed alongside some of the most vulnerable members of the global community over the past 20 years. Supporting women and their families is where she is most focussed. She has previously worked across government and non-government services; providing face to face direct client work, through to the management of child and family Programs. She is also a qualified Doula and Early Years Consultant and proficient in evidence-based Teaching and Feeding Scales in relation to parenting attachment. Professor Leonie Segal, Foundation Chair Health Economics and Social Policy, Australian Centre for Precision Health, University of South Australia / SAHMRIWhy infant mental health must become a greater priority – from a child, family, societal and economic perspectiveLeonie Segal’s research focus is the causes and consequences of child maltreatment and options for prevention, drawing on understandings of complex trauma and the interface between child maltreatment and poor mental health. She completed the first needs-based study of infant child and adolescent community mental health services, identifying a huge gap between level of need and services. She set up the iCAN (impacts of child abuse and neglect) data-linkage study to inform this research, and has &gt;200 publications and led several NHMRC and ARC grants. OUR CHAIRProfessor Claire Roberts (HDA Co-Convenor), NHMRC Leadership Fellow / Professor and Matthew Flinders Fellow / Group Leader, Pregnancy Health and Beyond Laboratory (PHaB Lab), College of Medicine and Public Health, Flinders University.Claire Roberts is an internationally recognised authority and thought leader in placenta research. She has a strong interest in genetic and modifiable lifestyle factors including maternal nutrition that contribute to health in pregnancy and long into the future for mother and child. She has lead research on large human pregnancy cohorts in Adelaide since 2005.This event will be held under COVID-SAFE guidelines. Seating will be limited. Please only register if you intend to attend in person. TICKETS REQUIRED ON ENTRY.The University of Adelaide is following SA Health social distancing and personal hygiene guidelines, permitting one person per 2m2 with a 1.5 physical distance between guests.Light refreshements will follow the session.
