OUR SPEAKERSA/Professor Sue Nichols, Senior Lecturer, UniSA Education Futures, University of South AustraliaDoctors, friends and Google: Parents using child health informationA/Professor Sue Nichols is a specialist in the field of parent involvement, and has an interest in how parents use resources to support children’s learning, literacy and healthy development. Her research offers insights into how mothers and fathers seek, assess, interpret, use and create resources and how this might differ in association with parents’ educational background, literacy level, gender and family characteristics. The findings highlight the importance of the internet for child health information and raise the issue of the need for critical health literacy. Sue is an A/Professor of Education whose research has been funded by the Australian Research Council, the Ian Potter Foundation and University of South Australia. Sue was recently awarded an ARC Discovery grant for the project Parent Involvement Goes Online: New ecologies of school-home connectivity.Dr Kobie Boshoff, Senior Lecturer / Lisa Porter, Lecturer OT, Allied Health &amp; Human Performance, University of South AustraliaUnheard voices: Parents’ health service experiences supporting their children with disabilitiesDr Kobie Boshoff is a paediatric occupational therapy expert, and has been investigating the experiences of parents when accessing health services for their children who have autism. Consolidating the voices of 236 parents of children with ASD across Canada, the Unites States and the UK, the study describes the experiences of families in accessing and using mainstream health services, finding that negative experiences have significantly outweighed positive ones. Her presentation will discuss implications for services and practitioners in how to support parent advocacy and involvement for children with disabilities. Kobie is a Senior Lecturer in the Allied Health and Human Performance academic unit at the University of South Australia. Lisa Porter has a clinical background in Injury Management, Workplace Injury Consultancy, Aged Care, Dementia Care and Disability. I am the Occupational Therapy Academic for the Department of Rural Health, UniSA, residing in Port Lincoln. She has been a University of South Australia tutor and clinical placement supervisor in the School of Health Science, Occupational Therapy Program since 2014 and currently lectures and tutors for Master of Occupational Therapy and Bachelor of Occupational Therapy Programs. She has a lived experience of parenting, caring for and advocating for a child with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, navigating the complex systems of disability services and the NDIS in South Australia. Professor Damien Riggs, ARC Future Fellow, College of Education, Psychology &amp; Social Work, Flinders UniversityMen, trans/masculine, and non-binary people’s experiences of pregnancy loss Professor Damien Riggs is an ARC Future Fellow in College of Education, Psychology &amp; Social Work at Flinders University. Across the world, a small but growing number of men, trans/masculine, and non-binary people are choosing to conceive and give birth to children. As is true for all people, pregnancy loss is an unfortunate reality faced by many people. For men, trans/masculine and non-binary people, however, given cisgenderism in hospital settings and in society more broadly, a pregnancy loss may bring with it specific meanings unique to this diverse population of people. Drawing on interview data collected in three regions (Australia, the EU and North America), this paper reports on the experiences and needs of men, trans/masculine, and non-binary people who have experienced a pregnancy loss. Ms Alexandra Diamond, Lecturer in Early Childhood, UniSA Education Futures, University of South AustraliaLearning from community cultures: Families’ concepts of healthy developmentMs Alexandra Diamond is a lecturer in Early Childhood and a PhD candidate. Alexandra will share insights from her doctoral study with small Indo-Fijian community, in Fiji. Alexandra will particularly focus on consent for participation in research processes, and on the importance of researchers and practitioners entering into a learning orientation.
