<h2>Artist Spotlights</h2>The Other Film Festival WA 2021 presents a series of six artist spotlights which highlight the practice and unique working process of key artists in the arts and Deaf and Disabled space(s). Responding to three central themes: Authenticity &amp; Disability Leadership, Audience Engagement, and Disability-led Creative Process; the artist spotlights present an opportunity for artists to present their work and discuss their practices as they exists beyond merely advocacy for access inclusion: and as tangible, culturally rich, and legitimate forms.<h3>12 – 1pm: Artist Spotlight | Gaelle Mellis</h3>In the words of Gaelle Mellis, diversity is more than a social justice issue – disability is diversity, and it is urgent for Deaf people and people with disability to be the producers of their own image and the storytellers of their own lives. As the 2020 recipient of the Geoff Crowhurst Memorial Award at the Ruby Awards, Gaelle Mellis chronicles her career leading to this recognition and her commitment to championing for a more inclusive cultural landscape.About the artist:Gaelle Mellis is an award-winning designer, access consultant, and collaborator. Having worked in theatre design for over 25 years, her designs have toured Australia, the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, New Zealand and the United States. She has designed for companies including the Australian Dance Theatre, Restless Dance Theatre, Brink Productions, State Opera SA, and the Dublin Theatre Festival. Seen as a cultural leader within both the disability arts and mainstream arts sector, Gaelle was one of 50 people globally to be invited to attend the International Convening of Thought Leaders run by the Kenney Centre in Washington DC. She was also invited by the Theatre Board of the Australia Council as one of 15 women filmed for the Woman in Theatre exhibition. Gaelle was a co-founder of Ladykillers and a co-founder Creative Director of Access2Arts. She is currently the Disability Screen Strategy Executive at the South Australian Film Corporation and Chair of Disability-led Outlandish Arts. About The Other Film Festival WAAn Arts Access Victoria initiative, The Other Film Festival started in 2004 and is a ground-breaking, international, disability-led program that elevates Deaf people and people with disability’s voices, stories and skills within the Australian screen industry.Presented in association with Perth Festival, this year’s The Other Film Festival WA is DADAA’s second expanded iteration of the project, encompassing a program of film screenings and artist spotlights driven by leading creatives with disability. This program represents the innovation and critical engagement with disability-politics that our creative sector needs at both a national and international level.
