Join us on 17 November and hear about community initiatives that are helping to protect Melbourne's waterways and environment

Join us on November 17 for a panel discussion on how community-based initiatives are helping to protect your local environment. This panel will give you an insight into the passion that drives individuals and groups to take action and protect your local environment. From litter cleanups, educational events and planting, this panel will show that everyone can make a positive impact - and might inspire you to start your own or join an existing community-led initiative.

<h3>The Little Litter Project </h3>Candace ColacoThe Little Litter Project educates people about the impacts of littering, equips the community with tools to better manage waste and hosts clean up events. <h3>Friends of Scotchman's Creek and Valley Reserve</h3>Sally WalkerThe Friends of Scotchmans Creek and Valley Reserve (FSCVR) is based in the City of Monash and organises a range of activities to engage the community and care for the Scotchmans Creek corridor and the adjacent Valley Reserve. One of their main activities is a revegetation program which they undertake in co-operation with the Monash City Council Horticultural department. As part of this they usually run several community and corporate planting sessions this time of the year generously supported by Melbourne Water grants. Their Water watch group and river officer take a keen interest in the creek and regularly monitor the water quality and creek condition. <h3>Friends of Andrews Reserve</h3>Ben Golding Friends of Andrews Reserve has been set up by local community members who have been using and enjoying this little bit of wilderness in the middle of the city for a number of years. Setting up this group declares our intention to give something back to the bush.An earlier group, Friends of Walmer St, did a huge amount of work clearing weeds and planting in the reserve, they’ve since disbanded. Without their contribution our task would be even more difficult.The reserve still has a surprising range of natives plants and animals in it, fields of native grasses, sweet bursaria, hop bushes and yellow gums along with the blue-tongue lizards, bush rats, goshawks and wallabies which live in the ecosystem. However the native plants are gradually being outcompeted by introduced species and by carefully removing the weeds, we are tipping the balance back in the native’s favour.

The panel will be structured a little differently to what you might be used to with each panelist interviewing each other. This will let you be witness to a deep-dive of ideas and experiences.
