In this session, we&#x27;ll be discussing what working outside academia can be like, and how researchers can prepare themselves to cross sectors. There are a lot of different ways it can happen. Our wonderful panel of invited speakers will talk about careers, finding opportunity, and what works when you&#x27;re looking to leave academia. Marilyn Jones is an Executive Recruiter and Scientist with over 22 years’ experience in resourcing staff for companies and assisting individuals with their career aspirations.Marilyn undertook research in cancer &amp; immunology, leading to managing R&amp;D projects for developing human therapeutics, wheat identification and infectious diseases testing. After a period of selling complex scientific instrumentation systems to research and industry, she made the fortuitous move into Health &amp; Technology Recruitment. Marilyn’s focus in starting her company in 2011 was to look after the individual. This has developed into an extensive program – JobStrategy (TM)- working with candidates to assist them find their next career opportunity. mexec careers recruitment division partners with start-ups to multinational companies with their hiring requirements, from graduate to board level.

Dr Sue Forrest has over 35 years of experience in the medical and scientific sectors in research, commercial and not for profit entities. An experienced senior executive manager in roles including CEO, Director of Research and Career Advisor, Sue has a passion for mentoring and developing staff both within her own team and across an organisation.Throughout her career Sue has been actively sought after to be an advisor and mentor to numerous executives, post docs, PhD students and colleagues in the science industry and academic sector, ensuring they had a broad view of career options and the doors that were open to them.

Dr Sara King is the Training and Engagement Lead for AARNet. She is focused on outreach within the research sector, developing communities of interest around training, outreach and skills development in eResearch. She is currently working on creating reusable guidance information for Jupyter Notebooks and other AARNet services to be adapted for Carpentry training workshops. She is passionate about helping others develop the infrastructure and digital literacies required for working in a data-driven world, translating technology so it is accessible to everyone.

Dr Ben Kraal is a Director of Experience Design for Symplicit, a customer led innovation consultancy. He says working in industry as a user experience researcher is all the good bits about being an academic and none of the marking or weekend emails.Before escaping the academy, Ben was a research fellow and lecturer in Industrial Design at QUT where he got to research how nurses bandage people’s legs, what people do in airports and the potential organisational impacts of electronic health records in disability care.Ben’s background spans computer science, sociology and design. He's currently reading too many books.
