About this event

The Global Compact Network Australia invites you to a discussion on Climate Change and Human Rights with Fiona Reynolds, CEO of Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) and Robert Vaughan, Human Rights Officer, United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner.

Businesses are a critical actor for the world to achieve net-zero by 2050. Whilst many businesses have traditionally approached climate change as an environmental, economic and risk issue, more recently the broader societal and human rights implications of climate change are gaining attention.

Climate-related events such as Australia’s ‘Black Summer’, record flooding and rainfall in Brazil, record cyclones in the Pacific, prolonged heatwaves in the UK and the locust plagues in east Africa are demonstrative of not only of the environmental consequences of climate change, but of the human dimension of climate change: from the loss of homes leading to widespread displacement; the loss of livestock and key agricultural crops; the increased risks to disease; and, most importantly, the loss of human life.

To address this increasingly relevant topic, and hear about the role that business can play, we invite you to our conversation to explore the following key areas:

  • The human rights dimension to climate change: what this means for businesses in our region
  • Integrating the human rights lens to climate risk and why this matters for investors
  • Human rights, climate change and displacement: what role should businesses play?

This event will take place via a live video stream. Register now.

As a special initiative of the UN Secretary-General, the United Nations Global Compact is a call to companies everywhere to align their operations and strategies with ten universal principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. Launched in 2000, the mandate of the UN Global Compact is to guide and support the global business community in advancing UN goals and values through responsible corporate practices. With more than 11,000 companies and 3,000 non-business signatories based in over 160 countries, and more than 60 Local Networks, it is the largest corporate sustainability initiative in the world.

Locally, the Global Compact Network Australia (GCNA) brings together signatories to the UN Global Compact, including more than 30 ASX 100 companies and other major corporates, non-profits and universities, to advance the private sector’s contribution to sustainable development through the universal framework provided by the UN-mandated Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Ten Principles. We lead, enable and connect business and stakeholders to create a sustainable future by supporting businesses to act responsibly and helping them find opportunities to drive positive business outcomes.
