Strengthening foundation skills in Tasmanian workplaces – A fireside chat with Jennifer Dunbabin, Cath Ralston, Meagan Newton and Catherine Baker

The Australian Workplace Practitioners’ Network (AWPN) leads the development of foundation skills in the workplace by connecting and supporting the diverse workforce interested in strengthening foundation skills in the workplace.Originally established to provide professional support for people working in WELL Program funded activities, the AWPN has reinvented itself and now provides professional support for all professionals interested in strengthening foundation skills in the workplace. This includes industry managers and supervisors, VET trainers and LLN specialists, and resource developers and researchers. AWPN Inc

This webinar offers you the chance to look under the hood on a successful workplace literacy grants program. This will mostly be through the experience of a project run by the National Disability Service in Tasmania. They are the disability sector’s peak body. 
Jennifer Dunbabin from 26TEN will give a short outline of the grant program.  Then Cath Ralston, project manager at NDS, Meagan Newton, literacy practitioner at NDS, and Catherine Baker from Parkside Foundation will share what they have learnt about engaging their member employers and working with employees. 
26TEN is a network of organisations and individuals working together to improve adult literacy and numeracy in Tasmania.
26TEN funds employers to improve their employees’ literacy, numeracy and communication skills. Projects also include making documents more easily understood. Benefits to employers and employees can include improved productivity and compliance, and less accidents and near misses. Employers often apply for a grant when their business is having to make significant changes.

Jennifer has worked in the VET sector for nearly 20 years, focusing mostly on workforce development and industry engagement. Projects included managing Tasmania’s contribution to the Australian Flexible Learning Framework. A highlight was a national project that explored (and experimented) with developing VETNet, a fibre network for the VET sector. For the last six years she has been privileged to be part of the 26TEN Team in Tasmania and has immersed herself in all things LLN.

Cath Ralston works with National Disability Services in the position of Workforce Adviser (Disability Workforce Innovation Network) in Tasmania. This role oversees the development and implementation of a sector-wide workforce strategy and action plan, including a sector-wide workplace literacy project. Cath is an experienced trainer/assessor in IT, business and access programs, and an instructional designer. She has focussed on the delivery and management of access programs in workplaces, communities and prisons in metropolitan and remote areas. Cath holds qualifications in business, adult education, and LLN teaching practice.

Meagan Newton is the Adult Literacy Skills Officer with National Disability Services Tasmania, working with disability service providers to implement the Tasmanian Disability Language, Literacy and Numeracy Action Plan in their workplaces. Meagan has worked in the VET sector for over 25 years, in quality assurance, RTO management, and as a trainer and assessor specialising in workplace training and assessment, business and foundation skills. She has a passion for supporting people to develop their LLN skills and access employment opportunities.  Meagan holds qualifications in economics, business, training and assessment, and is currently completing a Graduate Diploma in Adult LLN Practice.

Catherine Baker works with The Parkside Foundation, a disability and aged care service provider in Hobart. Her position as Quality and Systems Manager is broad. In addition to responsibility for the quality system, the position oversees recruitment, induction and workforce development. Catherine has worked in the disability sector for over 25 years here in Tasmania and also in Victoria. She began her career during the period of deinstutionalisation of people with disability, and has worked in various service delivery leadership roles. Catherine holds qualifications in disability and training and assessment.
