Description

In 2010 the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the online journal database JSTOR found themselves being hacked of 4.5 million journal articles. Through a series of decisions and consequent outcomes an MIT staff member, Aaron Swartz, committed suicide. Following this tragedy JSTOR decided to release the 4.5 million hacked articles free to the general public in his memory. To this day the response of MIT and law enforcement authorities continues to generate much public debate.

Risk and uncertainty management is relevant to everyone irrespective of organisation or sector. Despite this, learning and development is often ad hoc and takes place during crisis situations. Good decisions, however, can not only result in organisational success, but also significant individual rewards.

This ANU Melbourne Alumni Network event will be exploring the MIT and JSTOR example in an interactive boardroom-type workshop. Issues will be explored from a range of perspectives including leadership and management, legal, public relations, finance and communications. The workshop will be highly relevant to people wanting to build understanding about how senior management / leadership positions arrive at decisions during a response to a major incident affecting an organisation.

Keynote speaker: Dr Erik Lithander BSc (Hons), MPhil, PhD, ANU Pro Vice-Chancellor (International & Outreach)
