Abyss Project is an interdisciplinary, UNESCO Ocean Decade endorsed initiative that positions ocean literacy as a critical pathway to sustainable marine governance and conservation. Founded by marine scientist Nathalie Simmonds, the project combines scientific research, place-based storytelling, and immersive ecotourism to translate complex ocean knowledge into accessible, engaging, and transformative experiences.

Based in New South Wales, Australia, the Abyss Project delivers guided marine expeditions focused on whale and seabird migration, coastal ecosystems, and offshore biodiversity hotspots. These experiences are underpinned by citizen science data collection and informed by current research in marine protected area management, stakeholder engagement, and environmental communication.

By fostering emotional connection, scientific understanding, and participatory engagement, the Abyss Project contributes to the goals of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development supporting a more ocean-literate society capable of making informed decisions for the future of our oceans.
