About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

For Refugee Week 2024 Yarra invites our community, staff and Councillors to celebrate the valued contributions refugees make to the communities in which they live.

The event will be hosted by Yarra City Council in collaboration with community members and local service providers. The event will showcase a panel discussion drawing on this year’s theme of finding Freedom: Family by shedding light on the transformative power of familial bonds in the face of adversity.

We will hear from community members Leyan Awata, Alaa Nor, Reem Mohammed, and Nada Awata, our host Flora Chol, plus a comedy performance by Samuel Gebreselassie.

Yarra City Council has been a proud Refugee Welcome Zone since 2002, being one of the first local governments to join this initiative. We recognise and celebrate the valuable contributions of refugees and asylum seekers to our community.
