Professional Development
The City of Wanneroo libraries (in association with our partners) invites interested teachers to attend a seminar series introducing the FREE professional learning materials and resources available to all teachers of mathematics across Australia. Three online courses have been developed to suit teachers of students in years F-2, 3-6 and 7-10, respectively. These courses were developed centred on evidence-based and culturally responsive pedagogies. The resources have been developed by the team at The University of Adelaide in partnership with Educational Services Australia and the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (among others) with funding from the Australian Government Department of Education.
These sessions will be presented by Dr John West, President of the Mathematical Association of Western Australia (MAWA) and member of the Maths in Schools writing team since 2021. John will give a live demonstration of The Maths Hub, including the free curriculum planning tool and the Maths in Schools PL resources. If you wish to bring along a device, John can help you enrol in the PL courses and you can follow along live.
During the project John has had the pleasure to work alongside Dr Caty Morris and Professor Chris Matthews of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mathematics Alliance (ATSIMA). John will talk about attending the national summit on improving educational outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in April 2024 in Adelaide, and the Commitment statement that was signed by the leaders of all of the state mathematical associations across Australia. Dr Caty Morris has kindly agreed to connect online to speak about culturally responsive mathematics pedagogy.
