Participate the Stitch & Yarn monthly group

If you are keen to cultivate creativity and togetherness while you learn to embrioder, this monthly stitching and conversation group could be for you.

Hosted by community and textile artist Michelle Jahn, you will learn to embroider on all sorts of interesting photographs that mean something to you. You'll get the chance to give your old holiday (or any themed) photos a new lease on life using a range of embroidery techniques and colourful threads.

Stitch and Yarn dates are:

14 September | 19 October 2024. Times are 1-4pm.

Stitch & Yarn exhibition

Share your photographic stories with other creatives while we stitch and prepare our embroideries for an exhibition together.

Over the months you develop and perfect your stitching skills. Then you'll get the opportunity to present your creative outcomes in a gallery environment.

The artworks created over the months will be exhibited at Gallery 1855 in 2025 - approximately April/May.

Other things you need to know:

Participation in the group and the exhibition is free.

Participation in the Stitch & Yarn exhibition is optional. If you prefer to attend the group only, that's perfectly fine.

Michelle will teach you a number of embroidery stitches. No previous experience required.

Suitable for Stitch & Yarners 16 years and older

We supply

• Op shop sourced thread and yarn but you can bring your own special thread if you want.
• Spare backup photos. Just in case you don't bring any along.
• Embroidery equipment.
• Embroidery designs / templates.

You supply

• Your original photos or copies of your old photos. With copies, please make sure you use heavy paper - 180 - 200 gsm.

About the facilitating artist

Michelle comes from a long line of farmers daughters. So a dislike of waste and the ability to make something from nothing makes her very good at being creative with waste or pre-loved materials.

Michelle studied fabric design at the former North Adelaide School and she has been creating art ever since. After graduating Michelle established her own arts practice and worked for SA's state opera as their fabric designer and finisher. Years later she re-emerged as an independent textile artist who lives and breathes her art practice.

As much as she loves creating her own work she relishes helping other people realise their creative potential. She encourages play, experimentation, and imagination and her workshops leave you feeling rejuvenated and inspired.
