Specialist Training: Working with Women on Temporary Visas Training


Fully funded by Safer Pathways, this training will equip experienced FV professionals with a deeper understanding of the multiple systemic barriers experienced by clients/families from migrant and refugee backgrounds, specifically of women on temporary visas, as well as referral pathways and support available to this particular client cohort experiencing family violence in Wimmera and surrounds. Through a range of case studies, participants are also encouraged to problem solve in groups and familiarise themselves with the common terminologies and possible scenarios to be aware of when supporting women on temporary visas.

woman’s capacity to access services and support?

· Do you want to increase your understanding of the different temporary visa types?

· Do you want to increase your knowledge of referral pathways and support available for

women on temporary visas?


What you will learn:

· Reflect on your own professional practice using culturally responsive practice, cultural

humility, unconscious bias practices and an intersectional approach. ​

· Discuss how systemic barriers and discrimination may impact on clients/families from

migrant and refugee backgrounds to seek and sustain service support.​

· Apply the principles of culturally responsive practice when engaging with clients/families

from migrant and refugee backgrounds experiencing multiple systemic barriers and

discrimination.

· Understand the importance of identifying the visa status of migrant and refugee women

experiencing family violence.

· Discuss the impact of visa status on family violence for migrant and refugee women and their

children.

· Identify different visa types, their conditions, obligations, eligibility for services and support.

· Understand referral pathways and support available for women on various temporary visa

types, and where to seek this information.
