Join us for an evening with guest speaker Tahera Nassrat to celebrate Refugee Week.
Tahera is an ambassador for the Refugee Council of Australia and currently works with local councils and the Australian Government, advocating for refugees, women’s rights and education.
Tahera was working with Médecins Sans Frontières in the northern part of Afghanistan when the Taliban attacked the city in 1998. That same day, she was forced to leave the country or face execution. She started her journey of uncertainty to reach a safe country by fleeing to Pakistan. Tahera arrived in Sydney eventually after some years and continued her education. She took on the responsibilities of raising amazing children in her family.
In her talk, Tahera will share her life journey of uncertainty directly impacted by the ongoing conflicts and crises, internal displacements and migration. Learn how she is now advocating and empowering others to have a better understanding of being a refugee.
This talk will be followed by delicious food and musical bands and dance groups!

Refugee Week (16-22 June) is a celebration of the contributions refugees and people seeking asylum make in our communities. It's also a time when all Australians are encouraged to educate themselves about the issues that affect refugees, as well as listen to the stories of those seeking asylum.
The theme of this year's Refugee Week is Finding Freedom: Family. This theme invites us to explore the stories of refugees who, despite the challenges they encounter, discover a source of freedom within the embrace of their families.

The City of Sydney's Reginald Murphy Community Centre is open Monday to Friday 9:30am until 3:30pm. There are a table tennis and snooker table, computers, wifi, books to borrow, a piano to play and sewing machines to use, and tea and coffee, all for free. Everyone is welcome!
