Brittany Vermeulen and James Arvanitakis will share their experiences with successful intersectoral and multidisciplinary sustainability projects, including their reflections on best practice, effectively building and leveraging partnerships, attracting funding and the progression of ideas to action.
About our Speakers
Ms Brittany Vermeulen is a full-time staff member at Western Sydney University working in the field of sustainability for the last 10-years. Her work includes designing and delivering curriculum transformation and storytelling around Education for Sustainability and student experiences for Western students, as well as external local and regional community-based programs, previously leading a global youth program addressing the SDGs across 12 countries. She has been acknowledged for her leadership in this space with a Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Award in 2021 and a Teaching Excellence Award (Partnerships) in 2022. Brittany is also currently undertaking a PhD at Western with a research interest in the intersection of science education, pedagogical design, sustainability, and student learning.
Professor James Arvanitakis is the Director of the Forrest Research Foundation and recipient of various awards including the Prime Minister’s University Teacher of the Year, Australia India Council Eminent Researcher and received an Excellence in Education Award by the Australian Financial Review. A Fulbright alumnus, he oversaw the application of Western Sydney University to apply the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification Pilot. He is the inaugural Patron of Diversity Arts Australia and sits on various boards including the Perth Festival and education board of the Governance Institute of Australia.
