This is a face-to-face training that takes place over 2 days at the following dates and times:

Saturday July 13, 2024 & Sunday July 14, 2024 from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm each day

Course Description:

This face-to-face training is focused on helping you to enhance your communication skills in an active learning class. Blending didactic information sharing and hands-on skills practice, this training will introduce you to Motivational Interviewing, followed by in-depth experiential learning of how to engage, focus, evoke and plan an effective Motivational Interviewing intervention.

Working from an evidence-based practice perspective, the training will be tailored to the participants to build up practical skills that can be applied immediately. We will focus on the 4 processes of Motivational Interviewing which will help you better engage your clients, reduce stress and burnout, and facilitate the population you work with to build their own motivation to change. There will be video examples, audience participation, and skill practice, creating a very interactive training experience.

You will learn how to/Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the background to Motivational Interviwing and applications to a wide range of people seeking support to change behaviour
  • Understand the concept of ambivalence and learn to work with it instead of against it
  • Identify the "righting reflex" and know how to manage it
  • Differentiate the 4 processes of Motivational Interviewing
  • Navigating the building blocks of effective communication and develop the micro skills of Motivational Interviewing
  • Conduct assessment in a Motivational Interviewing style
  • Strategically responding to change talk
  • Work with sustain talk and discord to improve engagement and clinical efficacy
  • Discuss the application of the principles and practice of motivational interviewing with specific groups
  • Discuss case examples and how to overcome challenges in therapy

Meet your presenter:

Dr Sally Hunt has over 20 years experience as a clinical psychologist and has completed training in Motivational Interviewing with William Miller and Joel Porter. Her PhD examined behaviour change inteventions for people with comorbid depression and alcohol misuse and she has gone on to develop, trial and implement several evidence based behaviour change programs. Sally has an outstanding teaching record as a senior lecturer in post-graduate psychology training, early career researcher mentoring and (in her side hustle at https://thekotoda.com.au/) running watercolour painting classes. Sally's teaching has been recognised with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Educator Innovation and Impact Award (2020), the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Merit List for Teaching and Learning Excellence (2020) and School of Psychological Sciences Supervision Excellence Award (2022) from the University of Newcastle.
