About this event

Projected stories under the moonlight

Moonlight Stories provides a visual platform of projected artwork under the moonlight and the stars, imparting stories from the artist to the audience. Sound is experienced through bluetooth headphones, that fully immerse the audience into the depths of the sound and vision this stunning artwork. Moonlight represents an important cultural touchstone to the local North West tribe, the Tommeginne who traveled seasonally across the Northwest, including Table Cape. The full moon represented a time for Tommeginne people to gather, share food, and stories around firelight. Moonlight Stories, provides us an opportunity to connect to a similar experience, an opportunity to learn, and share stories around a different kind of light, but still under moonlight again.

Our Projected Artwork - tunapri by Caleb Nichols-Mansell

Caleb presents a projected artwork, tunapri, with an accompanying soundscape that responds to place through the vision, creativity, and voice of a contemporary Tasmanian Aboriginal artist. Projected visuals in the form of original paintings, drawings, digital illustration will tell the story of country. The deep time connections of a culture and community who are connected to place, people, and time will come together to honour those who have gone before and look forward to the future. The aim of this work is to provide an opportunity for the audience to take an intimate journey into the hearts and minds of the Tasmanian Aboriginal community while also reflecting on our shared histories and connections. tunapri is a Palawa Kani language word that loosely translates to ‘knowledge’ and encompasses the intentions and concept behind the work. It can be interpreted as knowledge of country, knowledge of community, knowledge of culture or knowledge of self. Ultimately, we are sharing our knowledge of place and people.

Extra information

The projection show is around 15 minutes. We will start the show at around 6.00pm for the first show or when the site is dark enough.

It will be very, very cold and windy on the top of the cape. This provides an extra dimension to our experience, as this was what it would have been like for the Tommeginne on the cape when they stopped here, and also for later inhabitants, the lighthouse keepers and their families. Take a moment to soak in the atmosphere while you wait for the show to start.

Arrive at least 5 mins prior to the show start time. Late access will not be an option. This is to ensure safety on the site as it is very, very dark. The road to the cape is sealed until you get to the turnoff for the lighthouse. There is approximately 1 kilometer of unsealed road to get to the lighthouse. Please drive slowly and cautiously at this time of night as there are MANY animals on the road up to the lighthouse and back to Wynyard.

Bring a blanket, warm clothes, and a thermos of hot chocolate to help keep yourself toasty. No alcohol is permitted on the site. Save that for when you go back to town!

We will have someone at the gate to assist with directing you to an appropriate parking spot. Our guides will help show you to a suitable viewing area. Please stay within the marked boundaries. Do not go beyond these boundaries as it is very dark, and it will be very easy to get lost and lose your footing.

Please note; There are no toilet facilities at Table Cape Lighthouse- please make sure you take the opportunity prior to the show start.

We will supply you with bluetooth headphones to wear for the event. These have their own individual volume control. Use the time prior to the start of the show to adjust your volume. Our volunteer guides will assist you with this. You will not be able to hear the soundtrack to the show without wearing these headsets. You can just view the show if you prefer, but you will miss out on the narration and sound score.

In the event of rain, fog, or strong winds the show will be cancelled. You will be advised by text message if this is the case- so keep your phone handy! If you do not have a phone for us to contact you at short notice, we cannot advise you if we need to cancel.

Enjoy this very special experience under the moonlight and the stars.

If you no longer require your tickets, let us know so we can put those tickets back into the pool.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a ticket to this event or can I just show up?

Yes, you need a ticket- and No, you can't just show up. This is because the parking is limited on the site, as is the safe viewing area. It is very dark at night, and very dangerous if you wander off beyond the marked out areas.

Can I just drive in after the show starts?

Unfortunately No. This is because your headlights will interfere with the viewing experience of the show. If you are late, you will need to rebook for another time.

Should I bring my kids to the show?

Children can come to the show but MUST be supervised at all times as it is very dark up on the cape at night. This is a colourful and magical projection artwork, however ,some younger viewers may not be able to appreciate the experience for 15 minutes. Consider if your young people will enjoy it.

Can I bring my dogs to the show

No.

Does everyone need a ticket? We are going in the car together.

Yes, every person will require a ticket.

Are there toilet facilities on the cape?

No. You will need to take the opportunity prior to the show.

What happens if it rains or is very windy?

Due to the nature of this event, rain, heavy fog, or heavy wind will mean we will have to cancel the show. We will send you a text message prior to the show if this is the case. You may be able to book in for another night's show if you are in the area long enough.

Can I take photos at the show?

Yes, but no flash photography is allowed during the show. This is because it will interrupt the visual experience of others, and yourself!

Can I bring food and drinks?

Yes. You can bring your own snacks, a thermos of hot coffee or hot chocolate is highly recommended. No alcohol is permitted. Please take your rubbish with you as we will not be providing bins.

Is this projection site access friendly?

Yes. Our volunteers can help with parking, and guide you to a suitable viewing area for your needs. Make sure you get to the show a little early so we have plenty of time to get you comfortable!

How do I drive there?

Take the road to table cape lighthouse from Goldie Street. Follow this up the hill until you see the sign pointing left to Table cape lighthouse. Please drive SLOWLY as in the evening there are MANY wallabies and animals on the road.

Is this a COVID safe event?

Yes! We have a COVID safety plan in place. All equipment used by the audience will be sterilized prior to being handed out and after use. Sanitizers will be available at the site for use. Face masks are optional.
