Experience the powerful and thought-provoking documentary "Israelism" at Ballarat Trades Hall, presented by Free Palestine Ballarat. The film follows the journeys of two young American Jews, Simone Zimmerman and Eitan, who were raised to staunchly defend Israel. Eitan joins the Israeli military, while Simone advocates for Israel on American college campuses. However, their perspectives are shattered when they witness the mistreatment of Palestinians firsthand, leading them to join the growing movement of young American Jews challenging the traditional narratives and demanding freedom for the Palestinian people.

"Israelism" reveals a profound generational divide within the American Jewish community as young Jews, like Simone and Eitan, increasingly question the beliefs instilled in them by their synagogues and Hebrew schools. The film also features voices from across the spectrum, including Jewish educator Jacqui, who asserts the inseparability of Judaism and Israel, and former Anti-Defamation League President Abe Foxman, who downplays the significance of these dissenting voices. Prominent thinkers such as Peter Beinart, Jeremy Ben-Ami, Noura Erakat, Cornel West, and Noam Chomsky contribute their insights, enriching the narrative.

Directed by first-time Jewish filmmakers who share similar experiences to the film's protagonists, "Israelism" is produced by Peabody-winner and four-time Emmy-nominee Daniel J. Chalfen, executive produced by two-time Emmy-winner Brian A. Kates, and edited by Emmy-winner Tony Hale. This documentary uniquely explores the shifting attitudes of Jewish communities towards Israel, highlighting the significant implications for the region and for Judaism itself. Don't miss this compelling screening and the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussion.
