About this event

  • 3 hours

Learn the magic of making up songs on the spot in a focused workshop with one of the leaders in the Australian industry. 15 year veteran musical improviser Emmet Nichols will take you through key components of improvised singing in a playful, feedback focused session.

With an emphasis on maximum practice opportunity, participants of all levels will explore elements of rhyming, rhythm, developing memorable choruses, communication and song structure, built on improv fundamentals.

Bringing his tertiary training facilitation skills, Emmet creates a safe space for exploration and fun. It's a serious session on something very silly.

Please note: you do not have to be a 'good' singer to participate! A love of singing and silliness will do fine. Beginner and advanced musical improvisers welcome.

About the Company

Impromptunes is Australia's premier improvised musical theatre troupe, having performed Impromptunes - The Completely Improvised Musical to sold out audiences and rave reviews since 2013. Performing in Melbourne Comedy Festival, Perth Fringe World, Adelaide Fringe, Melbourne Fringe and even Edinburgh Fringe, receiving awards nominations and a recent win. Impromptunes has presented over 400 completely improvised musicals. The team also releases a weekly podcast, Impromptunes - The Completely Improvised Musical Podcast, which, with over 250 episodes, has been twice nominated for Best Comedy in the Australian Podcast Awards.

About the Facilitators
The troupe is directed by Emmet Nichols, a veteran 15-year improviser. Emmet started in The Big Hoo Haa in Perth and soon worked with Glenn Hall's Just Improvise. He moved to Melbourne and trained and performed with The Big Hoo Haa! Melbourne, The Improv Conspiracy and Impro Melbourne before starting Impromptunes in 2013. As well as dabbling in solo stand-up and interactive theatre, Emmet brings a wealth of experience as a tertiary trained educator to his workshops. He is passionate about fun, play and feedback, and creates a safe space in which to explore this ridiculous art form.

Your second facilitator in the room and scene partner is Jaron Why on piano. Jaron has been an improvised pianist since 2013, playing almost weekly for The Big Hoo Haa Melbourne! for many years. A multi-instrumentalist with multiple talents, Jaron also performs onstage as a cast member in Impromptunes. His ability to both lead and follow new musical improvisers on the piano is a testament to his understanding of all facets of the art form.
