About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

Come along to learn how to care for wetlands from your own backyard!

Hear from SERCUL and their Phosphorous Awareness Project about why wetlands are important, how nutrients and pollution enter these environments, the issues they are facing, and what you can do at home to help.

Get tips and resources for waterwise and fertiliser-wise gardens, growing local plants, reducing mozzies and ways to help prevent algal blooms.

After the presentation, please feel free to take a self-guided walk around Piney Lakes Reserve. The reserve has damp lands and associated paperbark forest, seasonal wetlands with an unsealed track, and artificial wetlands where you can see and/or hear a variety of wetland species. Please be aware that due to the seaonaility of these environments (and with the lack of recent rain) there may not be as much evidence of wetland animal species. Self-Guided Tour brochures will be available at the centre.

What to expect:

Length
45 minute presentation, 15 minutes for questions. (Please allow for additional time, 20mins to 1hour, to walk the reserve if desired.)

Event will start on time, but if you are running late, you may still join.

Location
Inside, Binjar Room, followed by an optional self-guided walk through Piney Lakes Reserve.

Requirements
If you choose to go on the optional self-guided walk of the reserve, we recommend comfortable walking shoes.

Adult learning space
Guests are requested to turn phones to silent, remain seated (where possible) during the event, be respectful to facilitator and other attendees alike, and exit discreetly as needed. This event may be suitable for children who can follow these expectations.

Accessibility
This presentation will include 45 minutes of sitting time. After the talk you are welcome to take an optional self-guided walk around the reserve. There are bitumised paths around the reserve, as well as some unsealed paths, and a wooden boardwalk. The various surfaces are marked on our self-guided tour brochure.

Disabled parking is available at front of Centre, rooms are located on multiple levels via a ramp and toilets are available within the venue. For specific access requirements please feel free to call or email the centre at (08)9364 0191 or piney.lakes@melville.wa.gov.au
