About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

Explore the history of Adelaide pubs that were once vibrant, bustling places but are now silent witnesses to the past.

Known as the city of churches, Adelaide has also been described as the city of pubs. We'll tell tales of hotels that no longer echo with the sound of bar chatter and clinking glasses, no longer emit the smell of stale beer and cigarette smoke, and are no longer run by bar staff with a raised eyebrow.

Most of these buildings have been demolished, but others survive - although they have been put to other, more sober, uses.

Join us for captivating tales of bookmakers, publicans, police, larrikins and lurk merchants.

We will watch a recording of the talk orginally presented by Mark Gilbert at the State Library South Australia. Stories live | State Library of South Australia (slsa.sa.gov.au)
