About this event

  • 2 hours

Hosted by Darebin Climate Action Now (DCAN) and The Neighbourhood House Network, at Span Community House, we are asking you to join us and make a submission to the Inquiry into Climate Resilience.

The Legislative Council Environment and Planning Committee will inquire into the main risks facing Victoria's built environment and infrastructure from climate change and the impact these will have on the people of Victoria, including:

  • how the Government is preparing for these impacts
  • the barriers in upgrading infrastructure to become more resilient to the impacts, and
  • the preparedness for future climate disaster events.

This is an opportunity for communities to share their experiences, stories, concerns, and ideas. People can have their say on the climate impacts they are concerned about and the risks that need to be considered in the adaptation process.

In 2024, communities are already battling intensifying climate impacts, such as bushfires, heatwaves, and floods. Disasters are increasing in frequency, becoming more unpredictable, and communities are experiencing compounding events at the same time.

Vulnerability to these impacts is not distributed equally. People already facing challenges due to their economic position, systemic disadvantage, or other exacerbating circumstances are disproportionately impacted (FOE).

The event will aim to support individuals or groups to send in a submission using video, audio or written options.

The event will:

  • Provide assistance to those wanting to submit who are unsure about the process or what to say
  • Provide a clear explanation of the process and answer any questions about making a submission that people may not understand
  • Enable people to share their experiences of climate impacts and their thoughts around what local climate adaptation could look like to feel heard and to help others with their thinking around what this could or should look like
  • Build connections with others and between those in the community also concerned about local climate impacts
  • Share good examples of climate adaptation - both already existing locally and those other communities are doing that could be replicated
  • Leave people feeling inspired about taking action and making a submission, and to take further action
  • Celebrate submitting with shared food and drink and chats, and
  • Provide a pathway to revisit the conversations had and take more action together.

We will have audio, video and computers available to help with submissions.
