About this event

Enjoy a special up-close encounter with owls from the WA Birds of Prey Centre. Learn how to identify local nocturnal birds, listen to their calls and even have the unique opportunity to hold one of our night hunters. After the encounter head out into Piney Lakes Reserve with a guide from Nearer to Nature in search of wild owls, tawny frogmouths and their habitat and keep an eye out for other local nocturnal critters such as bats, frogs, quendas and spiders.

Requirements

Encosed shoes, long pants and long sleeves recommended. Please bring weather appropriate clothing, a torch and mosquito repellent.

Type of event and expectations

Adult learning space-

Guests are requested to turn phones to silent, remain seated (where possible) during the event, be respectful to facilitator and other attendees alike, and exit discreetly as needed.

This event involves interaction with animals and a 1 hour nightwalk. Please ensure you follow the facilitator instructions and respect the animals at all times during the workshop. The safety and wellbeing of staff, participants and animals is incredibly important. By participating in this workshop, you agree to follow all safety instructions provided to you by the staff and facilitators and understand the facilitator may ask you to leave if your actions are putting anyone’s safety or wellbeing is at risk.

Accessibility

This event will include a 1hour walk around Piney Lakes Reserve at night, including along bitumised paths, and a wooden boardwalk. As the purpose of this event is to spot nocturnal animals, lighting will be limited to moonlight and torches.

Accessible parking is available at front of Centre, rooms are located on multiple levels via a ramp and toilets are available within the venue. For specific access requirements please feel free to call or email the centre at (08)9364 0191 or piney.lakes@melville.wa.gov.au

Directions to Centre

Please consider using public transportation. A bus stop, just a 2-minute walk away, is conveniently located near the Centre and services multiple routes.

The Centre is located at 555 Leach Highway, Winthrop in the Piney Lakes reserve. To reach us, if heading westbound, take the first left after Murdoch Drive on Leach Highway. If coming from the Fremantle area, continue on Leach Hwy across Murdoch Drive and use the designated U-turn just after the lights to move to the westbound lanes. Go back through the lights at Murdoch Drive and take the first left. Please park in the signed public carpark.

City of Melville's Directions from Young People Youth Strategy identified that our local young people feel concern over environmental issues but are unsure how to take action. They also felt that not many events were offered to their age group.
