Join Kite Therapy for our two-part virtual seminar on how to understand and support children with challenging behaviours in early childcare and education settings. This session will be led by Kristy Capes. Kristy has extensive experience in inclusive early education settings, including long daycare and Kindergarten settings, as a specialist teacher, therapist, Key Worker and the Centre manager of the La Trobe University Community Children’s Centre, which houses the Victorian Autism Specific Early Learning and Care Center (ASELCC), a pioneer in Australia.

During the first session you will learn:

  • To understand what drives challenging behaviour in young children, for example, avoiding demands, transitions throughout the day and so on
  • What tools can you use to understand an individual child’s behaviour, including tools to identify what is driving a challenging behaviour.
  • How to how to collect data as a team, to understand the function of the behaviour
  • Strategies to promote and maintain wellbeing of your team


During the second session you will learn:

  • How to embed practical strategies to support positive behaviour in the classroom
  • How to develop positive behaviour support plans for individual children
  • Approaches for collaborating with families, and specialists
  • How to create a more inclusive setting for all children

!Following the event, we will share downloadable resources, including data collection sheets and positive behaviour templates, and key takeaways via email.

Your facilitators

This session will be led by Kristy Capes and Rachelle Dunstan.

Kristy has extensive experience in inclusive preschool settings, as a teacher, therapist and centre manager of the La Trobe University Community Children’s Centre, which houses the Victorian Autism Specific Early Learning and Care Center, a pioneer in Australia.

In addition, Kristy is an Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) Therapist and certified trainer, and contributing author to extensive academic research in early childhood learning settings. Kristy has trained and collaborated with numerous earl education and care services and educators to support the participation and inclusion of neurodivergent children accessing their programs.

Rachelle Dunstan is one of the founders of Kite Therapy, and has extensive experience working in the disability ecosystem. Prior to founding Kite, Rachelle has worked and the NDIA, and led the Navigator team at Hireup, a free advocacy service to help families build capacity and confidence to navigate the NDIS.
