Sit in with us at Nightcliff Library as we hear from Gabrielle Samson as she recalls writing her moving memoir ‘Dancers On The Sea’ - Stories from Ataúro Island Timor Leste (1994 – 2002) with Rob Wesley-Smith.

About the Book
In the heart of a remote Timorese village, amidst the struggles of a harsh military regime and a growing resistance movement, Gabrielle, an Australian woman, embarks on a journey of compassion, courage, and love.

Asked by a Timorese village leader to help establish a kindergarten, Gabrielle leaves behind the comforts of her life at an Indonesian university to immerse herself in the rugged beauty and profound challenges of Ataúro Island. As the only Westerner in the village, she forms deep bonds with its people and finds unexpected love in the company of an Indonesian colleague.

Over the course of twelve transformative years, Gabrielle becomes an integral part of the community, witnessing its relentless fight for independence and enduring spirit. In "Dancers on the Sea," Gabrielle shares her remarkable experiences through six pivotal years, capturing the resilience, hope, and triumph of a people reclaiming their freedom.
