The Freilich Project

The Herbert and Valmae Freilich Project for the Study of Bigotry is an ANU research project that draws on a broad range of knowledge and expertise from within the university sector and beyond. We aim to connect people to high quality research on bigotry, prejudice, and discrimination, and to promote and disseminate research- and evidence- based approaches to supporting social inclusion and diversity in all social and institutional settings.

The Annual Alice Tay Lecture was named after former Board member of the Freilich Project and President of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC). The Alice Tay lecture series continues to explore human rights and their intersection with bigotry and is held annually at ANU.

Organized by

The Freilich Project at The Australian National University exists for study into the causes, histories and the effects of ethnic, cultural, religious and sexual bigotry and animosity. It also promotes research into how such intolerance can be combatted--and co-existence promoted--by educational and social programs.

Formally established in July 1999, the Freilich Project runs a range of lectures, conferences and seminars, all of which are open to the public. The Project also convenes a research network for scholars and awards small research grants.
