Westgate Biodiversity: Bili Nursery & Landcare

In July 2018 two well established community groups, SKINC and Friends of Westgate Park, merged to create one organisation - Westgate Biodiversity: Bili Nursery & Landcare.

The name Westgate Biodiversity recognises the organisation's committment to increasing the biodiversity of the park. ‘Bili’ nursery is a nod to the former nursery SKINC, as Bili is the Boon Wurrung word for small lizard-like skink – the name was suggested to us by Elder Auntie Fay Stewart Muir.

The two organisations have worked together for over a decade, complementing and supporting each other through the exchange of expertise, plants and seeds. They also assisted each other with event management and community engagement, particularly with volunteers.

Volunteers and staff work at Westgate Park from Monday to Wednesday performing maintenance tasks and revegetation activities. From Tuesday to Friday Bili nursery hosts both staff and volunteers that work hard in producing over 130,000 plants a year in support of securing the future of existing remnant plant populations and promoting the use of indigenous plants in local gardens.

The organisation has a strong volunteer program and hosts a variety of workshops and community engagement programs.
