The Forrest Centre is seeking to raise $5 million to complete a capital works program to build a 10 bed Palliative Care Hospice at The Forrest Centre in Lewisham Avenue, Wagga Wagga.
The Hospice will include single room accommodation, spaces for families to gather and consulting rooms for visiting doctors and other health professionals.
The Forrest Centre has a long history of providing compassionate care attending to the physical emotional and spiritual needs of residents and their families. The Centre has a philosophy of welcoming all, acknowledging the value of human life by treating others with dignity and respect so as to relieve the distress of suffering.
The Centre is part of the “Palliative Care Alliance” which includes Murrumbidgee Local Health District (including regional hospitals and the Community Palliative Care Team), Calvary Hospital Riverina and Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network, who have agreed to work together to provide a co-ordinated palliative care service for the Region.
The Forrest Centre Hospice will provide respite and long-term end of life care to all people to facilitate a dignified death. The hospice will complement the recently opened palliative care unit at Calvary Hospital Riverina, which principally has a medical intervention focus.
Statistics indicate that only 17% of people are able to die at home, despite over 70% expressing a wish to do so. The Forrest Centre Hospice will provide the means, outside of hospital, for family to be more present and comfortable in a high level care environment during their loved ones last days
