The Derivative Fiction Book Club
Hello! Hope you’re having a fabulous time. If you ever have trouble finding a text (some of them can be rather obscure), have a question, or would like a bit of advice, please send me a message through the Contact button on our page and I’ll help you out.
We usually meet at the Hotel Spencer, in the booths to the right of the bar: just ask the staff for the book club and you’ll find us.
Our group explores Derivative Fiction, a genre where writers draw on existing creations to reinterpret, honour, or reshape them. It’s a way to engage with familiar works in new and surprising ways. We meet monthly to share ideas, trade insights, and enjoy good company (and a few bevvies).
We explore three main kinds of derivative storytelling:
1️⃣ Appropriations – new takes on well-known texts, expanding or twisting their meanings.
2️⃣ Tie-In Novels – stories linked to major media worlds like Star Wars, Doctor Who, Barbie, and Transformers.
3️⃣ Fan Fiction & Tributes – community-driven works that play freely with beloved characters and stories, from brilliant reinterpretations to delightfully strange experiments.
If you love seeing how stories evolve and transform, this is your space. Join us for thoughtful discussion, shared curiosity, and plenty of laughter. Looking forward to seeing you soon.
