Workshop

 

The Library Study Support Hub STEM advisors run an extensive program of Study Know How workshops to assist students to prepare for the upcoming semester.  These workshops are aimed at students who will be studying courses involving maths, statistics, chemistry and physics who may lack confidence and skills in these areas.  The purpose of the workshops is to provide you, the student, with the skills to commence your semester one courses with confidence.  Please read the description of each workshop below.  You can attend the full workshop over several days or any part of the workshop.

Rooms for workshops will be published a week before the event.

Mathematics Study Know How Workshops

This workshop will cover basic Algebra, Trigonometry, Indices and Logarithms, Calculus, Complex Numbers and Vectors. A student who has not done maths for some years or who has not completed Maths Methods and Specialist Maths at VCE Year 12 would find this workshop a good preparation for first year Engineering, Geospatial and many vocational education maths courses

Maths SKH Workshop 1: Tuesday, 28 January to Friday 31 January 2020 – for all maths students

Maths SKH Workshop 2: Monday, 17 February to Friday, 21 February 2020 – for all maths students

Times: 10: 30 am to 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm

Chemistry Study Know How Workshops

For students commencing VE or HE Chemistry Programs in 2020. Build your chemistry skills over two distinct five-day workshops.

Workshop 1 covers the fundamentals, including problem-solving practice, atoms, electronic structure, the periodic table, elements, compounds, equations and balancing. 

Workshop 2 extends chemistry principles and involves further problem-solving.

Chemistry SKH Workshop 2: Monday, 17 February to Friday, 21 February 2020

Times: 10:30 am to 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm

Physics Study Know How Workshops

Physics Workshop 1: Physics for Students commencing Programs involving Physics concepts in 2020. Workshop 1 is aimed at students who have no background in Physics.  

The workshop will cover basic concepts such as measurement and units, vectors, displacement, velocity and acceleration, parallel and series circuits, circular motion. 

Advanced Physics workshop 2 is aimed at students who have completed at least the equivalent of Year 11 Physics.  The course will review and extend circular motion, dynamics, two and three-dimensional forces, moments and couples, projectiles and angular motion.

Workshops 1 and 2 each run for three days.

Physics SKH Workshop 2: Monday, 10 February to Wednesday, 12 February 2020

Times: 10:30 am to 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm

Statistics Study Know How Workshops

Statistics for students commencing Business and Psychology Programs in 2020. Topics such as summation notation, basic probability, sample spaces, binomial and normal distributions and hypothesis testing will be covered. Each workshop runs for three days.  You can attend as many sessions as you wish.

Statistics SKH Workshop 1: Tuesday, 28 January to Wednesday, 30 January 2020

Statistics SKH Workshop 2: Monday, 17 February to Wednesday, 19 February 2020

Times: 10:30 am to 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm

Advanced Maths Study Know How Workshop

Maths for students transferring from Vocational Education to 2nd or 3rd Year HE Engineering. 

This is an advanced maths workshop covering Differential Equations essential for many Higher Education Engineering Programs.

The workshop runs for four days.  You can attend as many sessions as you wish.

Dates: Monday, 24 February to Thursday, 27 February 2020

Times: 10:30 am to 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm
