Shopportunity Knocks Perth

Hello! Welcome to Shopportunity Knocks - my love project with 2nd hand designer fashion.

I'm Julie.

I dedicated 2016 to be my “year of thrift” where 95% of all my purchases were secondhand. I documented my purchases and styled outfits on my Instagram page @mythriftshift. Gradually, a worldwide community of like-minded fashionistas opened itself to me, full of support when I had a win, commiserations when I didn't and motivation to keep ploughing forward until I arrived at the notion of sharing my lifestyle on the Shopportunity Knocks tour.

Initially, my love affair was with Op Shopping or "thrifting". I started op-shopping for two reasons:

1) I was on a tight budget and

2) it was super fun and I quickly became addicted to “the thrill of the thrift”!

I was finding items that I knew to be of good value: well made and in excellent condition by brands that I have often coveted but never been able to afford. Sure, there was some (ok, a LOT) of tat through which to sift, but when I came up with the gold, boy oh BOY, was there a “EUREKA” ringing in my ears!

I wasn't even aware of any secondhand designer boutiques at the time. My only experience was with charity op-shops - Salvos, Vinnies et al. The first fortuitous foray into the world of quality pre-loved stores was the brilliant Mercado 32 - a store that will feature on our tour, even today. Once I fell down that particular rabbit hole, there was no going back. I now had access to the whole spectrum of fashion that I loved at a price I could afford without compromising on quality or longevity. I was hooked. You will be too!

The advantages of shopping at preloved boutiques are many:

1) The garments are carefully curated by the knowledgable owners to be free of odours, stains, loose threads and lost buttons and in the best resalable condition.

2) Brands stocked at each store are very specific and high quality: you won't find any fast fashion here!

3) Preloved clothing is sold at a fraction of the retail price but better quality often means better longevity

4) Australians discard clothing at an alarming rate into non-recycled landfill. Shopping secondhand eliminates this form of waste.

Perth's preloved designer scene is growing but still quite a hidden gem of a secret. The most common thing I hear on my tour is "Wow, I didn't even know this was here!". Come along and allow me to introduce you to this fun, quirky, ethical and sustainabley viable world of secondhand designer fashion.

Welcome.
