Jane du Rand Ceramic Mosaic Artist


Jane du Rand is a ceramic and mosaic artist working from her studio in Yeerongpilly, Brisbane. Born in Durban, South Africa, she has a Bachelor of Architecture Cum Laude from the University of Natal. Jane has run a ceramic studio for the past 18 years and is best known for her large scale commissioned ceramic and mosaic artworks in public spaces and on public buildings, as well as a great number of private commissions. She has completed projects throughout Southern Africa, and also in France, the Netherlands, Chile, the United Kingdom (Guernsey), Ireland and the United States of America (NewYork and Los Angeles).

In 2003 Jane won the public art competition at the new Constitutional Court Building in Johannesburg with her proposal to clad the 18 foyer columns with ceramics and mosaics based on indigenous trees. In 2009 she was nominated as a finalist for the Mercedes Benz Award for South African Art Projects in Public Spaces. Jane has had two solo exhibitions and has been part of a number of group exhibitions at various art galleries in South Africa.

Jane, now an Australian citizen, moved from South Africa to Australia at the beginning of 2014. She has most recently completed a Public Art installation in a park in Croydon,Victoria, for the Maroondah City Council as well as a large wall installation on a commercial building in Sydney. A notable recent commission was a 10m x 4m wall installation at the Ashford Castle Hotel and Spa in Ireland.

Jane runs regular workshops in her studio both for adults and for children. She has also tutored and run a visual communication course for Architecture students at the University of KwaZulu Natal, Durban. Jane has just completed an Artist in Residence at the Sandgate State School and is currently involved in an Artist in Residence program at Oakleigh State School.

In May 2017 Jane won the Best of Show award for her entry of ceramic sculpted houses at the Ipswich Art Awards.
