Fraunhofer-Bendigo-La Trobe University

The Fraunhofer Institute is Europe’s largest application-oriented research organisation. La Trobe University, City of Greater Bendigo, Coliban Water and Bendigo Manufacturing Group and connected supporters have joined forces with the Fraunhofer Institute to conduct three workshops in Bendigo.

The workshops are aimed at exploring with two representatives of the Fraunhofer – Professor Dieter Rombach and Steffan Hess, how a branch of the Fraunhofer could be established in Australia and be based in Bendigo and how the Fraunhofer model has been used to transform regional economies to create jobs and investment.

The Fraunhofer Institute is a German applied research organization with 72 institutes within Germany and 20+ throughout the world, each focusing on different fields of applied science. It employs around 24,500 people with an annual research budget of about €2.1 billion. Basic funding for the Fraunhofer is provided by the government but more than 70% of the funding is earned through contract work, either for government-and university-sponsored projects or from industry. Fraunhofer has centres in the US, other parts of Europe and Asia.

This event is aimed at profiling Bendigo’s advanced manufacturing sector, our desire to have a global reach, our openness to ideas on how we transition the Bendigo and regional economy and learn from similar regional economies that have undertaken this process.
