Dr Catherine Barrett is the Founder and Director of Celebrate Ageing, a National Program challenging ageism and building respect for older people (celebrateageing.com). The Program includes: The Tea Cosy Project (using art and story to challenge ageism); The OPAL Institute (addressing older people's sexual rights); and Alice's Garage (empowering older LGBTI Australians). A key to the success of the Program is The Celebrate Ageing Executive - a group of Elders who shape the Program and lead projects.
Catherine has over 30 years’ experience working with older people as an educator, researcher, consultant, clinician and capacity builder. In December 2016 Catherine left academia to establish the Celebrate Ageing Program.
The Celebrate Ageing Program uses a 'profit for purpose' funding model - income generated from educational actvities, symposiums and conferences is used to fund important projects that have not attracted funding. A particular priority is generating income to raise awareness of older women's right to be free from sexual violence.
