Dr Alan Duffy and Dr Katie Mack

Dr Alan Duffy

Dr Alan Duffy is a computational astrophysicist at Swinburne University of Technology creating baby universes on supercomputers to understand how galaxies like our Milky Way form and grow within vast halos of invisible dark matter. When not exploring simulated universes Alan lectures in physics as well as science communication at Swinburne University. Every fortnight Alan tries to explain breaking science on his space segment with ABC Breakfast News TV, ABC Radio Melbourne with Clare Bowditch and is a regular on Ten’s The Project.

Dr Katherine (Katie) Mack

Dr Katie Mack is a theoretical astrophysicist. Her work focuses on finding new ways to learn about the early universe and fundamental physics using astronomical observations, probing the building blocks of nature by examining the cosmos on the largest scales. Throughout her career as a researcher at Caltech, Princeton, Cambridge, and now University of Melbourne, she has studied dark matter, black holes, cosmic strings, and the formation of the first galaxies in the Universe. Katie is also an active online science communicator and is passionate about science outreach. As a science writer, she has been published by Slate, Sky & Telescope, Time.com, the Economist tech blog "Babbage", and other popular publications.
