David Cherry is a Clinical and Forensic Psychologist who has been working for over 40 years. David worked as a Family Court Counsellor in Melbourne for 18 months. He then worked for 14 years with children and young people in out-of-home at Berry Street Incorporated and the Canterbury Family Centre. David’s responsibilities at Berry Street and the Canterbury Family Centre were: the developmental and intellectual assessment of children and young people; supporting the staff to provide the best possible care for the young people they were working with and; assisting parents to develop their skills so that their children could be returned to their care.

David had a private practice as a psychologist for over 25 years working with children, young people, and adults. During that time he gave evidence in court on over 400 occasions in family court, child protection, criminal and civil matters.

During his 35 years as a trainer, he has worked with staff in local, state, and commonwealth government as well as workers in the health, welfare, disability, aged care, education, and homelessness sectors.

David presently provides training on the following topics: Handle with Care ™ -Staff Safety and Defusing Situations where Individual may be Aggressive; Managing Vicarious Trauma; Understanding and Maintaining Professional Boundaries; Managing Difficult Calls; Interviewing Skills; Case Notes and Record Keeping; Report Writing and Coping with Cross-Examination; Understanding Burnout and Pathways to Recovery; Developing Good Behaviour Habits and Thinking Habits; Difficult Conversations (Adults); Difficult Conversations (Children and Young People) and; The Occasional Counsellor ™ which is for people who are not employed in a counselling role but are called upon to support others who are acutely emotionally distressed.
