Event description

Description

Join Meath Conlan for a relaxed and informative experience of Zen meditation.

What is the practice of Zen meditation?

Zazen (sitting meditation) is the practice of stilling the mind through wholehearted attentiveness to the breath. This steady attentiveness, coupled with the stillness of the body, frees the mind from its ordinary activities of thinking, and daydreaming. Zen takes discipline and effort. The support of group sitting is a strong encouragement to practice.

What are the benefits of practicing Zen?

When practiced attentively, Zen offers an ever-deepening insight into the oneness of life. This insight reveals to us our own human potential, challenging us to use this potential in the service of others. It’s an insight that anchors us in the present moment, clarifying and supporting our readiness to meet the ever-changing circumstances of daily life. Zen is not a religion but a practice. It gives us a method to put contemplation into action. It disposes us to not analyse or theorise about spirituality or life. Instead Zen plunges us into the midst of contemplation in which we attune to the reality of the present moment.

About Meath Conlan, PhD

In his book about his 20-year friendship with the late Bede Griffiths, Meath Conlan explains how his mentor went beyond the distinctions that separate persons and spiritual traditions. In 1984 Bede encouraged Meath to take up Zen meditation with two Zen Masters - Enomiya Lassalle SJ and Ama Samy SJ. Zen remains his contemplative practice. Meath is a retired priest, published author, fine artist and Zen teacher in the Ama Samy lineage. He has long been active in interfaith dialogue—encouraging people of all religions to meet and respect one another’s traditions and points of view. In his experience, many people leaning toward a deeper form of prayer, are often attracted to studying Zen simply because they seek a more contemplative and centred life.
