Description

YSPN Brisbane would like to invite you to a Luncheon with with Sapreet Kaur (Executive Director of the Sikh Coalition) focusing on Advocacy in the Age of of Fake News.

Sapreet Kaur has been executive director of the Sikh Coalition since 2009. In the last 8 years in charge of the organisation, it has tripled in size and is now of the biggest Sikh Civil Rights organisation in the world.

The Sikh Coalition is a community-focused organisation that works towards securing safer schools, preventing hate and discrimination in the broader community, creating equal employment opportunities and empowering local Sikh communities.

Sapreet will be speaking about the Advocacy for the rights of Minorities in this new age of Fake news. We will hear her story and her thoughts to being a Female head of an organisation such as the Sikh Coalition and the challenges that come with such a Leadership position.

Before joining the Sikh Coalition, Sapreet served as the Managing Director of Strategy at Teach for America, and currently sits on the National Board of Directors for Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. as Secretary and International Commissioner. She also serves as Secretary on the Board of Directors for the Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation. Previously she served on the Board for the World Association of Girl Guides and Girls Scouts – the 10 million member global umbrella of the Girl Scout movement.

Sapreet also served in the Peace Corps from 1998-2001 in Uganda and Kenya. Sapreet has also been featured in The New York Times, Time Magazine, Huffington Post, The Daily Beast, National Public Radio, and Fox News as well as being the first Sikh to ever speak at a Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service in 2013.

Sapreet has been instrumental in helping the Sikh Coalition in its mission to achieve a world where Sikhs, and other religious minorities in North America, may freely practice their faith without bias and discrimination. With offices and staff in New York City, California (Bay Area and Los Angeles), Washington D.C. and Chicago with over one hundred volunteer community advocates working to protect Sikh civil rights across the United States, the Sikh Coalition is one of the biggest Sikh Advocacy groups in the West. They also provide direct legal services to people who's civil or human rights are violated, as well as promoting diversity and through education of Sikh beliefs and ideals into the broader community.

We will find out about the challenges involved in lobbying for Sikh rights within one of the biggest democracies in the world and the great strides they have made to make it safer for all Sikhs living in America.

We look forward to seeing you there.
