Workshop outline

Every skill you learn will at some time be useful.

Practice make perfect.

Read the manual or watch YouTube videos on whatever you want to know.

Photography teaches you to visualize and think outside the square, be different.

Learn the basic rules then find ways to break them.

Sharp focus and perfect exposure isn’t everything, blur can be a very useful tool.

Develop your own style. - Look at what successful photographers have produced and give it your own interpretation.

There’s nothing that hasn’t already been done.

Don’t be afraid of criticism if your style is not mainstream, better a few valued comments from people who matter rather than the many who may not understand.

Be different, lead don’t follow. Find your niche and work it.

Enter competitions but always remember that the outcome is not that important unless you happen to win a good prize.

It’s not the quality of your camera that makes the difference, it’s the quality of the eye of the artist that matters most.

Shoot in black and white for dramatic effect.

‘Real’ photographers share their knowledge.

Don’t become a ‘gearhead’ travel light but always have the ‘essentials’.

Understand how your camera takes a picture whether it’s film or digital.

Don’t overprocess your images on the computer, doing less means you’re getting better.

Only use the built-in camera flash as a last resort.

Develop confidence by knowing your craft.

Get yourself known by submitting your photographs to newspapers, community groups, etc. Make sure they include your name in the credits.

If you take a photo that you might think is newsworthy get it to the newspaper, tv, etc as quickly as you can.

Always back up you images as quickly as you can to avoid losing them, all storage devices will fail, some quick, some not so quick but all will.

Learn how to care for your camera and avoid problems.

Always charge your battery before you go out on a shoot. Having a full spare is advisable.

For street photography, preset your camera to the correct exposure and focus so it’s ready to go when than ‘special’ shot appears out of nowhere.

Try to develop ‘intuition’. Learning to predict what might be about to happen can often get you the winning shot.

If it doesn’t challenge you - it won’t change you.

Don’t shoot what it looks like - shoot what it feels like.

It’s all about the light……. and sometimes the shadows.
