Event Details

Agriculture Victoria, with Meat and Livestock Australia and Australian Wool Innovation, is pleased to present the Young Farmer Farm Business Boot Camps, an exciting three-day program for young farmers or producers new to managing a farm business. Delivered at various locations across Victoria, the Young Farmer Farm Business Boot Camps will assist producers to understand and manage business risk, develop a business plan to grow their business and to have confidence that there is a future in agriculture for them.

The Boot Camps are aimed at young producers from beef, sheep and mixed farming businesses. Young farmers are encouraged to attend with other business partners. These fun and interactive workshops will utilise a series of farm case studies as real life examples, providing participants with the skills to help them manage their farm business now, as well as planning for their business into the future. Participants will have ample opportunity to discuss individual circumstances with the presenters throughout the workshops.

Past participants of this program (piloted in 2015) reported their knowledge, skills and confidence have grown in managing their farm business as a result of attending the Boot Camps.

Comments from past participants include that they are “more confident managing whole farm budgets” and have “greater confidence in business management”.

“[attending these workshops has] strengthened my belief that proper economic planning and analysis is important in a good business”.

These workshops will also provide a great opportunity for young producers to network with each other throughout the sessions and during the evening meal between day two and three.

As this past participant comments on the dinner: “It was great to network with other young farmers and get to know them in a more relaxed atmosphere……."

 Topics to be covered include:

  • What are your farms profit drivers, risks, and cost structures? Do you have a strategic plan?
  • Overview of farm financial literacy, determining and improving the performance of your business, evidence based decision making.
  • Plan for profit, risk, succession planning, and pathways to farming for young people.
