Event description

Description

"Violence against women and their children is not an inevitable or intractable social problem. Rather it is a product of complex yet modifiable social and environmental factors. Put simply, violence against women and their children is preventable." Change the Story, A shared framework for the primary prevention of violence against women and their children in Australia, Our Watch

Would you like to learn how to create change in your community?

To create a social enterprise idea that aims to prevent violence against women?

We are now looking for 40 young male and female leaders aged 13-18 from the Parramatta area to join a special Young Change Agents program to be held at Collaboratory, 96 Phillip Street, Parramatta. This event is supported through the City of Parramatta Council's Preventing Violence Against Women Grant Program.

Over the course of 2 days, you will work in teams to create a vision map, understand root cause, practice ideation & design thinking techniques, create a social enterprise model, undertake market validation, prototype,
form a budget and pitch ideas to a judging panel!

Things to note

  • We will be utilising resources from Our Watch - Change the Story, A shared framework for the primary prevention of violence against women and their children in Australia. This framework states that, "violence against women is serious, preventable and driven by gender inequality." The gendered drivers or root causes they identify are: 1) CONDONING of violence against women 2) MEN'S CONTROL of decision making and limits to women's independance 3) STEREOTYPED constructions of masculinity and femininity and 4) DISRESPECT towards women and male peer relations that emphasise aggression. The actions required in response to these drivers are: 1) CHALLENGE condoning of violence against women 2) PROMOTE women's independance and decision-making 3) CHALLENGE gender stereotypes and roles 4) STRENGTHEN positive, equal and respectful relationships. Your social enterprise idea will seek to make a social impact in one of these areas!

  • A social enterprise is a business that's prime purpose is to solve a social problem. To ensure you can create social impact you need to create a viable business model. This program will give you the toolset and skillset to do this.

  • Although this is a very serious topic, the program is also fun, fast and hands-on. You will learn lots of practical design thinking and entrepreneurship skills that you can use into the future. You will also meet other local youth leaders from your community!

  • Each day will start at 9am and end at 5pm. You will be pitching at 2pm on Sunday.

  • Lunch and snacks will be provided. Please provide any dietary requirements when registering

  • You must be between 13-18 years old to attend with no exceptions. Parental permission is required and your nominated parent or guardian will be sent a permission form which must be completed, signed and sent back prior to the event (not on the day)

  • You must live within the greater Parramatta area

  • We are looking for a mix of both females and males to participate so please select the ticket type appropriate for you.

  • Your faciliators are Co-Founder and CEO of Young Change Agents, Margaret O'Brien and NSW Programs Manager Kayleigh Rumbelow. Young Change Agents delivers programs within schools in partnership with the NSW Department of Education Future Learning and also with other NFP organisations including the Australian Red Cross, Cerebral Palsy Alliance and the Daystar Foundation. Over 750 youth have now participated in our programs creating over 130 social enterprise ideas.
