Event description

Description

Is there something you want to say or do you have some ideas you want to explore? Maybe zines are your medium.

Zines are independently published, small-run publications that are usually handmade and are created for niche audiences. The ideas explored in zines are often too dangerous, or too niche for mainstream publishers to risk their reputation or capital on. But largely free from these concerns, Zine makers are free to be overtly political, explore the weird and wonderful or just make art for arts sake.

It means that anyone can make a zine on just about anything they want.

Join Queensland zine creator Jeremy Staples for You won’t really know till you try it a series of zine making workshops and meetups that will explore how the Library can be a supa useful resource for Zinesters and will serve up participants with a heap of the tips Jeremy has collected over his 18 years making zines.

A SINGLE TICKET GIVES YOU ACCESS TO THE THREE WORKSHOPS AND TWO MEETUPS.

*** COMMENCES SAT 10 AUGUST UNTIL THU 29 AUGUST ***

Workshop One | Saturday 10 August | 1-5pm

Participants will be introduced to the range of approaches to zine making, distribution and their contemporary relevance. Participants in this workshop will get a practical, hands-on understanding of the Zine making process from start to finish. Participants will produce an 8-page mini-zine inspired by a guided tour of the the special exhibition Swings and Roundabouts: 100 years of Queensland political cartoons.

Workshop Two | Saturday 17 August | 1-5pm

Participants will start the workshop with a brief tour of the State Library heritage collection. After the tour participants will learn the key processes that go into creating a successful collaborative zine. Participants will work with the facilitator to plan out the group publication together, and develop a schedule for creating the content.

Workshop Three | Saturday 24 August | 1-5pm

In this workshop participants will learn the steps to finish ready for copying. Steps covered include editing and editorializing, resizing and layout, making a proof and creating a print master.

Meetups | Thursday 22 and 29 August | 6-8pm

As well as these three fantastic workshops with Jeremy, participants will get access to the resources and equipment in State Library The Edge’s digital media and fabrication labs during two meetups where they can create a collaborative zine. These meetups will be another opportunity for participants to come together and put into practice what they have learnt in the workshops, collaborating on content on 22 August and then printing and assembling the finished zine on 29 August.
