Lone Jespersen, Chair of the Global Food Safety Initiative technical working group on Food Safety Culture, will present on practical aspects of culture, followed by a discussion session on:

  • features of a strong food safety culture in a business
  • features of a poor food safety culture
  • how EHOs can help businesses improve food safety culture
  • challenges of maintaining a culture of food safety in a transient workforce
  • what you think is needed to help businesses improve food safety culture

Background information:

The concept of food safety culture has received increasing attention by government authorities and industry. Food safety culture is about a businesses’ management commitment:

  • It is driven by incorporating food safety into the business objectives and communicating the importance of producing safe and suitable food, both for the business and the consumer.
  • It is demonstrated by the food safety behaviours that are routinely practiced by everyone involved (owners, managers, employees).

Embedding food safety culture can be very challenging given the need to carefully define appropriate behaviours, the difficulty in changing learned behaviours, and the complexity of objectively evaluating the level of food safety culture in a business.

FSANZ is developing national resources (e.g national toolkit with guidance and checklists for creating and implementing food safety culture in business; self-assessment tools to measure current food safety culture and future improvements).

Your suggestions are welcome. This is an opportunity to share your insights and experiences.
